Listen to the audio guide
In 1900, the provincial government let the local government, guided by the major Luis Lamas, to expropriate the surrounded land to create a new park. The design was in charge of Carlos Thays, landscaper (also known for his work in the Jardín Botánico in Buenos Aires, among others).
In 1901, the municipality bought this land and draw the avenues and internal streets. There was also an excavation to create an artificial lake. This excavation was made by the prisoners from the near jail. With the soil obtained, they’ve created an artificial hill (named “La Montañita”).
History-Inspired Design
The Park is divided into four sections, each alluding to a different body of immigrants who helped give birth to the city:
The French Garden, a green area inspired by the aristocratic gardens of France.
The British Sector, which houses two establishments that were representative of the British community of Rosario in the early 20th century: the Newell’s Old Boys soccer stadium and the horse racing tracks.
The Spanish Sector with “El Rosedal” Square and its majolica fountain, a donation from the Spanish crown.
The Italian Sector, made up of a square with a statue of the Italian patriot Giuseppe Garibaldi.

Club Atlético Newell's Old Boys
Newell’s Old Boys Stadium, “Marcelo A. Bielsa” dresses passion in Red and Black in the Independence Park.
Founded in 1903, the "Club Atlético Newell’s Old Boys” was named after Isaac Newell, a remarkable English teacher and a passionate soccer fan. He was 16 when he arrived in Rosario, towards 1869, and after finishing his studies, together with his wife he opened the "Colegio Comercial Anglicano Argentino" (Argentine Anglican Business School), the first secular and multiracial school of Rosario. In 1884, Newell brought from England the first leather soccer ball and the first set of regulations, and it was in his school that the children began to alternate between studying and playing soccer. Due to its location in the heart of the Parque de la Independencia, the Club’s stadium is called “El Coloso del Parque” (The Park’s Colossus).

Some sportive milestones couldn’t be defeated. This is the case of Ángel Oscar Barattucci, a jockey that on December 15, 1957 obtained the 8 careers that were included in the Official Program, converting him in a record throughout the world.
The Independence Racecourse was the initiator in our country of night races, thanks to the appropriate light installations for this purpose.
At the present, this Equestrian Villa hosts caretakers, bullfighters, jockeys, pawns, tamers, blacksmiths, veterinarians, take care of more than four hundred thoroughbred horses day after day. Its purpose is to consolidate and promote equestrian activity, and to make this Racecourse the most important in the interior of the country, while generating a new tourist center for everyone.
In addition to the growth of the equestrian activity, the incredible property placed in the heart of Parque Independencia is becoming a multisport scenario thanks to the construction of synthetic hockey and rugby fields within the central oval, in addition to one of jumps and horse riding.
The synthetic rugby field was the great star of the World Cup for children under 20, an event that took place in Rosario in June. With a total surface of 103,5 m long and 78 m wide, a field of 100 m long and 68 m wide, the new rugby court placed on the central oval homologated by the World Rugby Union, who manages rugby throughout the world.

Jardín Francés
In the intersection of Av. Morcillo y Bv. Oroño, gardeners from the Dirección Municipal de Parques y Paseos reorder flowers to form the calendar. This task takes place since 1946 approximately. By this time, it was made between 4 and 5 a.m., now this task is done after 0 a.m., every day. Formerly, they used the flag colors for National Holidays.
Built in 1942, during a park renovation. The most important place is the big rectangular fountain with an sculpture, one of the largest of the city, since it’s 80 meters long. It is surrounded by descending flower beds, curved fences to delimit the borders, stone-mason with seasonal flowers ending in a protected site with green fences where a marble circular fountain stands out. This place is known as Jardín de Invierno (Winter Garden).
